Placeholder text exists so you can judge a layout without reading it. Real copy pulls your eye to the words; Latin nonsense leaves you looking at line length, rhythm and where the design breaks. The generator above produces as much of it as you need.
How it works
Choose a unit — words, sentences or paragraphs — and a quantity between 1 and 50. Two controls shape the output:
- Start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" begins the text with the familiar
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.so it reads as recognisable placeholder rather than as broken copy. Turn it off for text that varies from the first word. - Generate produces a fresh sample from the same settings, which is the fastest way to check that a component handles a range of lengths rather than one lucky one.
Sentences are built from a pool of the traditional vocabulary, 6 to 15 words each, capitalised and full-stopped. Paragraphs are 3 to 6 sentences. The randomness means two generations at the same settings differ, so use the copy button rather than expecting to reproduce a sample later.
Generation happens entirely in your browser — no request, no rate limit, and it works offline.
Using it well
Match the real length, not a comfortable one. The point of placeholder text is to stress the layout, and a designer's instinct is to paste in an amount that looks nice. If product titles in your data run to 90 characters, generate 90 characters. If a field is usually empty, test empty too. Most layout bugs live at the extremes: the card that only breaks with a two-line heading, the table cell that overflows at the longest value, the button whose label wraps in German.
Generate several variants. One sample proves one case. Regenerating four or five times, or filling a list with different lengths, surfaces the alignment problems that a uniform grid of identical blocks hides.
Lorem ipsum is Latin, and Latin is narrow. It has no diacritics, no long compound words, no right-to-left script and no CJK characters. A layout validated only against it can still break on Straßenbahnhaltestelle, on Arabic, or on an emoji that changes the line height. For internationalised products, test with real strings from your actual locales.
Do not ship it. Placeholder text reaching production is a familiar embarrassment, and a search engine indexing a page of Latin treats it as exactly what it is: a page with no content. Add a build check, or at minimum grep for lorem before release.
Where filler text belongs
Beyond visual design, generated text is useful as test data: seeding a database with enough rows to make pagination real, filling a text field to its maximum length to check validation, or producing a payload large enough to exercise a size limit. Tests that use it should still assert on structure rather than on the text itself, since the content changes each run — a test that depends on a specific random string is a flaky test waiting to happen. Testing fundamentals covers the distinction between fixed fixtures and generated data and when each is appropriate.
On the layout side, how text flows depends on the element that contains it, and HTML5 essentials covers the content model that determines it.

FAQ
- Why is it called "Lorem ipsum"?
- It's scrambled Latin derived from a passage in Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, used since the 1500s as placeholder text because its familiar letterforms don't distract from a layout.
- Can I start with the classic opening line?
- Yes — check "Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" to begin with the traditional opener before the rest of the generated text.
- Is anything sent to a server?
- No. Text is generated entirely in your browser.
